Favorite Sitcom Theme Songs for the TV Generation
74
Are you part of the TV generation?
Are you a member of the TV generation? If you're a Baby Boomer (born between 1946 and 1964) then you are! We were the first generation to grow up with TV as a major influence in our lives, and the first to spend a significant part of our daily lives watching TV. Remember the first wave of sitcoms like Leave it to Beaver and The Andy Griffith Show? Or the 70's gems like The Bob Newhart Show and Room 222?
Sitcoms back then were, in my opinion, much more cleverly created and had better writers than their counterparts of today - generally speaking, of course. Not to mention that the quality of acting in 50's, 60's and 70's sitcoms was superior to most in today's shows. But more than that, it was the episodes' themes back then that caught our attention and provided hours of enjoyment. No sex or drug use or dysfunctional families back then, no siree! Just a wholesome dose of hilarity and good clean fun!
Perhaps what we, the TV generation, remember most about our sitcom watching days when we were kids are the theme songs to our favorite shows. Hearing those old tunes again can bring back a flood of memories and make you feel like you should dust off your fondue set (in harvest gold, of course), fire up the old lava lamp and pull up a chair!
So why don't you do just that, and take a stroll down memory lane (perhaps in your penny loafers or your bell bottoms) with this collection of TV sitcom theme songs from the good old days! Then, be sure to vote for YOUR favorite theme song when you're done! Enjoy!
The Dick Van Dyke Show
Remember the naive innocence of the Dick Van Dyke show? They weren't even allowed to have a double bed in Rob and Laura's room!
The Beverly Hillbillies
This show was typical of the many silly and outlandish sitcoms from this era. And who could forget the song? Black Gold!! Yeeeehaaa!
Gilligan's Island
Didn't you wonder why Ginger and Mrs. Howell had all those clothes with them for a three hour tour? And that radio seemed to have batteries in it that magically worked for YEARS!!
The Addams Family
Creepy and crazy, the Addams family was a classic! My favorite was Lerch.
"You Raaang????"
Green Acres
Another nutty sitcom with zany characters. Gotta love it!
The Mary Tyler Moore Show
And who could forget groovy Mary Richards? A single woman out on her own! What a concept! And you've just gotta watch her toss the hat!
The Brady Bunch
No TV sitcoms theme collection would be complete without the dear old Brady Bunch. (I think I was permanently traumatized when I found out Mr. Brady was gay)
Hope you have enjoyed your little sojourn back to a simpler time. Now answer the poll (please??), and tell us YOUR favorite sitcom theme song in the comments section!

Being the country music fan, naturally I'm voting for Flatt & Scruggs doing the theme to "The Beverly Hillbillies." They're all good, though. Thanks for the hub.
Another vote here for MTM's theme song, partly because she was the first "liberated" woman (unmarried career-oriented woman living alone BY CHOICE) and partly because my boss at the time could've been Lou Grant's twin in looks AND personality! (Years later I actually met Ed Asner when he came to town to do a one-time performance of a play about the Darwin "monkey trial". Had to bite my tongue as he approached so I wouldn't blurt out "Oh, Mr. Grant!..."!) Somewhere I still have the TV Guide featuring the last episode of MTM, with Mary on the cover getting ready to turn out the lights for the last time. (sniffle sniffle) Thanks soooo much for the "Toss the hat" clip. Was nice to start my day with such a pleasant stroll down Memory Lane. ;D
I just enjoyed the whole thing to pieces. Yes, a real walk down memory lane. Thanks!
Wonderful hub, and a nice trip down memory lane. I voted for Mary Tyler Moore theme as well...but, my true favorite is the theme song from Giget:
"If you're in doubt about angels being real,
I can arrange to change any doubt you feel,
Wait til you see my Giget...."
Great Hub! My favorite has to be Mary Tyler Moore, simply because it was inspirational and sweet. It probably is my favorite show on the list as well because the issues are timeless.

GILLIGANS ISLE IS COOL, BUT WHY WERE THE HOWELLS CARRYING SUITCASES OF MONEY ON A THREE HOUR CRUISE. ALSO, WHY, WHEN GINGER WAS WEARING A SAILCLOTH, DID THE HOWELLS HAVE DIFFERENT NICELY PRESSED CLOTHING EVERYDAY? AND WHATS WITH HAVING FURS IN HAWAII? iI LOOK FORWARD TO ANY OTHER STRANGE OBSERVATIONS THAT YOU FOLKS MAY HAVE. I REMAIN.
